A reach out to the opposition?

April 4, 2010

Interfax-Ukraine Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has signed a decree on the appointment of Andriy Portnov deputy head of the presidential administration in charge of legal reform and judicial system.

The decree was posted on the presidential Web site on Friday.

Portnov is a member of the parliamentary faction of the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko. He was Tymoshenko’s representative at the Supreme Administrative Court in a suit challenging the Central Election Commission’s decision to declare Yanukovych the winner of the presidential race.

Now this of course will be seen as a non-partisan wise move by many.  It of course is a welcome development and a few more appointments such as this will go a long way to removing the label of a PoR “power grab”…….even if that is true.

What will now be interesting, as more BYuT party members are defecting and joining the majority coalition, is whether the BYuT internal instruction to resign from all positions of active government to go into opposition will remain.

It is certainly a cleverly calculated move which will now force a change of tactic from BYuT to such a policy or force the explusion of Portnov from the faction making BYuT look rather infantile that when offered a chance of serious positions they will refuse them on mass……..whilst also increasing the coalition majority by one if they expell him.

Thus far 7 BYuT MP’s have already left the opposition to join themajority coalition……and I hear rumour another 10 to 15 will do so before the summer.

It would surely not be wise to forcibly eject a BYuT in a senior role as well.
