Special session of the RADA

September 6, 2011

Well, today a special session of the RADA has been called and the President is to address it.

Quite what the substance is for this special session remains to be seen, however the opposition, in the form of the BYuT (Ms Tymoshenko’s faction) have stated they will not be attending. It remains to be seen if the other opposition parties attend or not considering it is at least in part to mark the 20th anniversary of Ukrainian independence.

According to the Deputy Chairman of the RADA, BYuT member Mykola Tomenko, not only will his party not be attending this special session, it will also only be maintaining a “polyvariant principle of work”. Thus a few BYuT opposition MPs will be in the RADA and the rest at the court house to watch the Tymoshenko trial.

I guess they won’t be able to complain when laws are passed they don’t like if none of them are where the public expect them to be (the RADA) but are all over at the court house instead.

That said, even if they were in the RADA they would be ineffective. It is no wonder, even as Yanakovych’s approval ratings plummet, those of the opposition do not go up either.

The expression “disenfranchised public” says it all.

I am so glad my interest in politics relates to policy and not party politics otherwise I would be as disenfranchised as the Ukrainian public!
