Euro 2012 – Kyiv, Donestk, Lviv and Kharkiv will host……..

December 11, 2009

Despite not having enough money to finance the purchase of a Chubachub Lollypop……..and the non-issuance of the last IMF loan tranche……..it seems Ukraine has convinced (or maybe bribed) UEFA into thinking it can pull off all the necessary improvements and investment prior to Euro 2012.

……..To be bloody hoped so now then eh?

(Mind you, it will be nice to see them have to spend money outside of Kyiv for a change!)

Turkuaz Restaurant/Nightclub – Odessa

April 18, 2009

Well, as the name suggests, this restaurant/nightclub has a very Turkish theme to it.

The theme does not run through the decor……..but the food.  If you like Turkish cuisine……..and I don’t dislike it, this place is Ok………..and it does the hookah!

www.turkuaz.com.ua

turk-1

It is on Deribovaskaya.  During the day, you can sit outside on the pavement in a “patio” environment in the summer months……as I have done on several occasions.

The menu is not “exclusively” Turkish…..and the standard “European” can eat here without a problem……..but hey, if you go to a Turkish Restaurant, you’re going for Turkish food right!!!

The nightclub itself does not open until 2200……..and stays open until 0600…….playing predominantly “dance” music.

turk-2

It does host live music on occasion, together with “show programmes”………………and strippers.

turk-3

………Well, I know you have been a little disappointed by the lack of “fun pillows” in my blog lately!!

Eh?…….You can’t see?…….But I always make sure every photo claiming to be taken of a place is taken from that place……it’s called authenticity!!

There are no better pictures of “fun pillows” from this club!!

You don’t care eh……….Ok, hang on…………….

turk-4

Happy now……….even though they have nothing to do with the nightclub in question??

It is quite a small club though, accommodating a maximum of 350 people………so therefore the average Ukrainian or Moldovan wedding packs it to capacity……..Errrrm, no I’m not joking, the last Moldovan wedding I went to, there were over 500 guests……….and no he works for me, he isn’t an Oligarch.

What?………..Sure, if you’re interested I will put a post together on traditional weddings here……..but this post is about the Turkuaz……which is an Ok place to eat!!

Most Unlike My Friend!!!

April 13, 2009

Well, I am amazed to be flicking through the English newspapers, catching up with the happenings at home to find an article on a good friend of mine here.

Why am I amazed?

Because he is a very private man who keeps a very low profile……..and it is most unlike him to have articles and photographs of himself and his family splashed all over the mainstream press!

As it happens, I’m meeting him for coffee today…….as I want to borrow his yacht for some corporate entertaining at some point this summer…….and well, corporate entertaining on his yacht, or in a leaky dingy which my meager funds can run too…….which would you chose?

boat-1

Anyway, I have printed the article for him……as despite it says he speaks “good English”…..that is a bit of poetic licence on behalf of the “press”…….so several coffee’s will be had whilst translation takes place.

I have already blogged about his Hotel…..the Mozart……..so find it and have a read.  If you have a spare Euro 24 Million, then I can negotiate it’s sale with him for you too……….nah, didn’t think you’d have that kind of money……me neither!!!

Anyway, here’s the link:

Club El Rico – Odessa

April 8, 2009

Found on Dobrovolsky in the city centre, Club El Rico opened it’s doors to the public in 2005.

el-1

I have called it a club…….although it is not what you would call a nightclub……or a bar……or a restaurant……..but somewhere within all three.

What?

Ok, I will explain.

It seats only 60 people…….so not a nightclub similar to those I have already written about, which can host 1000 plus people……although it has a dance floor/performance area.

It is a restaurant……..but it isn’t because of the live entertainment………which some of you will be pleased to know will be covered in a few paragraphs time…….which is not always conducive to watching when eating……as food will probably fall from your open mouth!!

el-2

It is not a bar……..because the food it fairly good and like I say, it seat 60 people.

The menu is what you can term “European” although heavily Spanish orientated.

The music has a wide variety depending upon which night you go and covers the Drum & Bass, Blues, Latino, Electro Pop, Hip-Hop, Disco and Dance spectrum.

There are also various acts which……….yes you’ve been waiting a few days now……includes strippers!!!!!!!!!!

el-3

It’s actually not  bad little place, as long as you can cope with tits in your Tortilla and nipples in your Neapolitan.

Eh?………What do you mean that wasn’t worth the wait and you’re off to another blog!!!……Hang on………………

el-4

Ok……….so you’ll be reading again tomorrow then.

The Continental Hotel – Odessa

April 5, 2009

Well, I still have a large number of hotels, nightclubs and restaurants to comment upon for you dear readers…..I think I can say readers now……as I had 75 yesterday alone…….so thank you one and all!!

What?……Yes I know most of them come to look at the pictures of the ladies……I can see that because my “Admin” facility tells me what has been put into the search engine to find me.

Eh?………Yes I know some of the readers will have trouble with long words……that’s why in England we have newspapers like “The Times”…..for grown-ups and the Daily Sport for those who can only be stimulated by visual representation.

continental-1

……..Yes, I’m afraid to say it is a daily “newspaper” in the UK.

Anyway, there are no “girly pics” in this post………as the Continental is a 4 Star hotel……..so therefore anything involving “girly’s” there, has at the very least, a thin veneer of respectability.

The Continental is to be found on Deribasovskaya in the City Centre.  In 2005 it under went a massive “face lift” and is now a very impressive building both inside and out.

continental-2

Yes….I know, looks Ok doesn’t it.  Well it should, it was built in the middle of the 19th Century and was designed by the famous….at least in these parts……architect, Mr F.V. Gonsiorovsky.

The hotel, like all Odessa hotels, does not accommodate that many guests……..a total of 32 rooms are available at the Continental…….although the rooms are large……some as big as the average Ukrainian apartment.

continental-3

The hotel also has it’s own restaurant called “Voyage”………which is pretty damned good……so good I would eat there more often, if I didn’t have 10% discount cards at 2 other restaurants!!

continental-4

The hotel is orientated not only for the tourist, with it’s own indoor swimming pool, sauna, fitness centre, massage service and solarium…….but is also geared towards the business visitor and provides a 24 hour night menu for those arriving at all hours, VIP service at the airport, car hire, the usual laundry and shoe cleaning services, dry cleaning and will take care of any emergency medical difficulties you may find yourself in……..like getting your toe stuck up the tap!!

continental-5

It also provides a conference room, scanning, copying, internet, secretarial, interpreter and basically a full back-office service to the business traveller…..including assistance with local legal and notarising services, together with a booking and collection service for any train or plane tickets you will require for any on-ward journey.

Cabbaged? – Try Galubsi

March 29, 2009

Well, you know what it’s like……if they’re young they hate it, if they’re old they like it…….but it creates havoc with their intestinal gases, meaning an afternoon on the sofa with the occasional body tilt followed by a rasping fart….if you’re lucky…..or a wet one if your not……escaping on an all too frequent basis!!!

4

Yes, we’re talking CABBAGE!!!!!…………..Hang on, stay with me here.

This is not a blog about cabbages, you can read about Tony Blair and Gordon Brown anywhere….who are after all complete and utter cabbages…….we are talking about an Ukrainian ingredient which makes up another favourite of mine…..Galubsi.

1

Ok…….having found your favourite comedy Christmas pinny……put it on, because we are about to create something from cabbage that you will become addicted too.

2

For this recipe you will need, minced meat, rice, garlic, salt, pepper, carrot, a sprig or two of parsley, tomato puree and……..a cabbage!!!

3

Ok…….Now for the Rule of “P“.   What?……What’s the Rule of P?   Planning  and Preperation Prevents  Piss Poor Performance…….Ok, I will continue……

Finely slice the carrot and grind the garlic.  Now, boil the rice…..which ever rice you like the most…..until properly cooked.

Find a large bowl and throw in the cooked rice, raw sliced carrot, crushed garlic, uncooked mince meat, salt and pepper and your parsley……..and mix it up thoroughly.

Now place the whole cabbage into boiling water for about 7 minutes and then remove it.  At this point the cabbage still looks like when it left the ground…..other than the stripping of some leaves you maybe didn’t like the look of!

At this point you start to cut off the cabbage leaves.  Place one leaf flat and take a small amount of you mixture and place it in the centre.

5

Ok, so far, so good……..easy in fact.

Now we get to see who wraps the presents at Christmas…….and who just puts they’re finger on the paper when you are looking for the tape!!

Wrap the filler in the cabbage……so you end up with something looking like………

6

No, it’s Ok………I’ll wait, it takes a bit of practice to wrap it up……..and you will be making a lot of them.  I’ll go have a cuppa and a quick smoke while you get on with the rest.   No….I won’t smoke in the kitchen……just give me a shout when you’re done!

7

………..Hmmmm,

What?……..You’re ready?  Ok, I’m coming.

Ok…..very nice job.  Place them into a tray with high sides with no gaps in between.

8

Ok……boil some water, squeeze in your tomato puree and mix it up……..so it looks like a very watery tomato soup…..and then pour it over your perfectly created raw Galubsi…….

9

Cook this for about 45 minutes……..no not boil it so hard that the cooker is covered in tomato puree you twat…..let it simmer for 45 minutes.

Ok……..that’s it.  Take them out, put them on a plate, cover them in cream, mayonnaise or ketchup…..or nothing at all…….and eat them whilst they’re hot!!

10

The only word of warning I can give about Galubsi, is that they are incredibly “more-ish”……….which will have obvious repercussions in the trouser department.

Hutorok Restaurant – Authentic Ukrainian Food – Odessa

March 29, 2009

There is very little to say about Hutorok other than is produces outstanding Ukrainian food.

It is located near Shevchenko Park in the City close to the sea.

hutorok-2

The style of the restaurant is circa 1900 Ukraine and it’s sole purpose is to revive traditional Ukrainian cuisine.

It has a garden, summer terrace and several large dining rooms decorated as per 19th Century Ukraine and eating there in the summer particularly, is like eating at a party in a local Ukrainian village.

hutorok-1

For those who enjoy live music you will be surprisedto find…..not traditional Ukrainian music in keeping with the restaurant……but the sounds Frank Sinatra and James Taylor wafting through the air.

What? …….Yes I know he’s dead.  I am not suggesting they have dug up Ol’ Blue Eyes, propped him up in a corner and made the old crooner work overtime……..well it would put you off your food anyway wouldn’t it…….No, they have singers there singing the songs made famous by these people…….OK!!!
