The Crimean Question – Referendum Ballot Paper released

March 8, 2014

Regardless of the constitutional legalities and legitimacy of any Crimean referendum, the question facing the Crimean population has been framed thus:

Two simple questions it seems.

1.  Do you want Crimea to join the Russian Federation?

2.  Do you want Crimea to revert to the 1992 Constitution and remain part of Ukraine.

Current arrangements are seemingly not an option.

However, should the result go in favour of joining the Russian Federation, the question is then whether Russia would agree despite the political capital employed in engineering the current situation.  A precedent exists whereby after numerous shenanigans in South Ossetia, when it subsequently asked to join the Russian Federation, the request was politely declined.

    • Yes I saw that tweet – He is a funny guy. The referendum could also have been framed as “Yes I want to join Russia” or “No I do not want to stay in Ukraine” as the choice.
