In Supporting Pussy Riot – What The F**k FEMEN?

August 17, 2012

OK – A Russian court sentenced Pussy Riot to 2 years in jail yesterday for their little stunt in a Russian Orthodox Cathedral.  To the very liberal thinkers, maybe that is absolutely fine.  For the broadminded, maybe somewhat obnoxious but nevertheless freedom of speech and expression is fundamental, albeit somewhat distasteful in the chosen location.  For the Russian Orthodox faithful who may have no interest whatsoever in the politics that came to follow the incident, the act was indeed an outrage and sacrilege.

We should also remember that despite the torrents of western press condemnation over the repression of freedom of expression this sentence will be interpreted as, not to mention the political condemnation of disproportionate sentencing that this will inevitably be called,  that the UK sentenced Charlie Gilmore, son of a very famous Pink Floyd father, to 18 months in a UK jail for swinging on a Union Jack hung on a cenotaph in 2010 – without any such condemnation and very little defence espoused  by the media over freedom of expression.

In short, Russian musicians can desecrate their cathedrals and when sentenced to 2 years in jail it is an outrage demanding an international response – but the son of a rock star swinging on the national flag on a monument to the national dead getting 18 months in jail is absolutely fine and a matter for the UK justice system requiring no comment.  Hmmmm!

Anyway, that has nothing to do with Ukraine thus far until the antics of FEMEN are highlighted in support of Pussy Riot and are taken into consideration.

Yes indeed!  The FEMEN support for Pussy Riot involves getting their tits out whilst chainsawing down a massive public Christian monument in Ukraine.

Now if young Charlie Gilmore can get 18 months in a UK jail for dangling from a Union Jack on a war memorial, Pussy Riot get 24 months for what many Russian believers will consider desecration of a major religious site, (regardless of the politics), what pray tell (no pun intended) should Ukraine now do with the FEMEN activists who feel it necessary to wave their tits in a camera whilst permanently hacking down a public Christian monument?  One has to suspect more than the 15 days they usually get for their antics.

Without doubt they would be jailed in the UK for the criminal damage alone (not to mention the nudity and undoubtedly obscure religious offences that will still be sat on the statute books somewhere that could be invoked ) as they have done far more than Charlie Gilmore did to earn his 18 month stretch!

Indeed, given the permanent damage they have caused, they have exceeded the Pussy Riot girls for many one has to suspect.  One wonders whether Pussy Riot would even appreciate such support via the FEMEN tactics displayed in the above video.

So FEMEN, to use a well known abbreviation, WTF?

  1. The part I liked best re the recent Femen performance was the comment from yesterday’s UkrPravda stating that the Femen had “mistakenly” chainsawed a Catholic cross. Leaves one musing : had they got it “right”, would they have destroyed an Orthodox one? (This public Christian monument was dedicated to victims of political repression, but obviously getting rid of it in such a spectacular fashion couldn’t have been the point, could it?)

    • Whether FEMEN got the right, or in this case as they have admitted, “mistakenly” got the wrong one, this time FEMEN have seriously screwed up. What they did was simply criminal and would have been simply criminal regardless of getting the right or wrong one.

  2. You obviously know nothing about the rooshan “orthodox church.” And it’s very obvious what your bias is.

The rashan “orthodox church” is not a church – it is a political arm of government. It was tied in with the KGB, and is now tied in with Putler, who used to be KGB – and still is.

The so-called “faithful” go once a year – at Easter – because their “priests” tell them that otherwise they will die and go to hell.

They the “faithful” go out and commit unspeakable acts.

Kirill dresses up like a Ku Kluix Klan wizard, wears a $50,000 watch which suddenly and magically “disappears” when he gets caught with it, and pals around with Putler in a KGB-like mutual admiration society.

You want to see this so-called church, watch this Georgian news video, starting at about 18 minutes.

    http://1tv.ge/video/14395

There you will see rooshan “orthodox priests” kissing Putler’s hand, and assorted morons praying to Putler’s icon.

The Pussy Riot girls were not in a church – they were in a political meeting place, and they were praying to the Virgin Mary to save roosha from Putler.

Unfortunately, between the so-called rooshan “orthodox church” and the sovok system, most of roosha consists of zombie freakazoids.

“Russians learn nothing, and forget nothing.”

Or as VIctor Chernomyrdin said, “we tried our best, but it turned out as usual.”

What “desecration” did Pussy Riot commit? Every time Kirill and Putler walk into one of those so-called cathedrals, they commit desecration.

    What is blasphemous is Putler.

What is blasphemous is the so-called rooshan “orthodox church.”

What is blasphemous is Putler and Kirill using the “church” to bolster Putler’s power.

What is blasphemous is so-called “priests” kissing Putler’s hand and praying to Putler’s icon.

If Russia were right side up, and a civilized society, instead of a crackpot autocratic sovok mafia state, I could agree with your analogy to England.

But Russia is upside down – as usual.

    • No I am not Russian Orthodox however almost all my Ukrainian relatives are and some of them attend the RO church several times a week – not just Easter – so your comment falls immediately at this point – particularly as my Ukrainian relatives are just that – Ukrainian, not Russian, nor lovers of Putin and those which go regularly aren’t even particularly political.

That though is based on knowing them personally (as I would being related to them) and not some rant from a US IP address which is a very long way from Ukraine.

As for the connection between the RO and the Russian State, I don’t see where in my post I make a case for them being truly secular – or even partially secular.

I make a statement which is true based on many RO believers I know, that they are genuinely unhappy with what Pussy Riot did in a RO cathedral.

Neither in my post do I state that the 2 years sentence is either right or wrong but point to similar disproportionate sentences being handed out in nations now decrying that passed in Russia. That is bias how?

The main thrust of my post however is aimed at FEMEN who today in Ukraine Pravda has said they made a mistake in hacking down a Catholic cross in their “support” for Pussy Riot.

I have no problem with them supporting Pussy Riot but I do have a problem with hacking down a Christian monument as a way to do it – The fact they didn’t even get a Christian monument associated with the RO church just compounds their actions as being misguided to say the very least, and regardless of whom the monument was erected by, is still criminal damage which cannot be hidden behind some form of “political support”.

As far as I am aware neither Pussy Riot nor Mr Gimore caused permanent damage in their actions unlike FEMEN.

Now if you are stating I am biased because I think the FEMEN actions are criminal, then so be it as permanently damaging that public monument is indeed criminal and would definitely result in arrest and a prison sentence in the UK.

It is a completely unnecessary and pointless act by FEMEN whom, if you read the history of this blog, I supported completely in their initial stance against the exploitation of women.

Since their beginnings though, IMHO, FEMEN have lost the plot and their latest actions in this case are disgraceful.

      • The Russian Orthodox church in Zookraine is not like the rooshan orthodox “church” in Roosha. You clearly know nothing.

        I have relatives also.

You might learn something from reading the closing statements from each of the 3 defendants.

If you had any integrity at all, you would reproduce them here, instead of relying on a false and stupid self-rightousness about FEMEN.

        Here’s the link:

        http://nplusonemag.com/pussy-riot-closing-statements

The Pussy Riot women know whereof they speak.

And they accurately state the political nature of the rooshan orthodox “church” and the stalinist troikas today in roosha.

Zookraine is just as upside down as roosha.

And in a lawless land, where Boyko steals $240 million in plain view on a government drilling rig deal, where there is unconstitutional piano voting in the Rada, where staliniist show trials of Lutsenko and Tymoshenko and other results in false convictions on trumped up charges, where Kirill comes to troll for money for himself on political grounds, where yanustalin steals Mezhyhyria in plain view, where a political billboard of a grandmother with a pussy cat is brutally suppressed by the Regionnaires mafia, where free speech is being systematically suppressed, where criminals are in government in a criminal system, where the criminals are systematically russifying Ukraine and trying to emulate Putler’s power “vertical” – FEMEN did the right thing.

There is no Christianity in roosha, and there is no Christianity in Zookraine – all you have to do is look at the criminal government, and all the criminals making big shows of going to “church.”

They wear their religion on their sleeve – but they believe none of it, and their actions show it.

You can feel as self-righteous as you want by picking on FEMEN.

But they are not the criminals in Zookraine.

And your bias for the criminal regime in Zookraine is self-evident.

      • I am well aware of the closing statements made by the women of Pussy Riot as I watched it live. I do not need to repeat them as I respect their point of view and actually consider them fairly intelligent women. I fully understand why they chose to do what they did where they did and the political statement it was meant to portray.

Nowhere in my post do I personally condemn them for what they did. In fact where Pussy Riot is considered I offer no personal opinions whatsoever. I do not state whether I place myself in the liberal category, or the broadminded category or the devout worshiper category (which I am clearly not as I am not RO).

At no stage do I try to separate church and State or identify who is ultimately behind their trial or sentencing.

The reference to the whole events in Russia are an intro to the actions of FEMEN – as per the title of the entry.

I no longer live in Russia, but I did. I know very well, with first hand experience how it works in Moscow because I lived there for years. I don’t need to read about it or be told about by relatives as I have lived it.

Unless you count a very brief period around 1917, nobody would claim that the Russian State and RO religion are anything other than symbiotic. But I never stated they were or inferred they were as that was not the point of the post.

You clearly miss the whole point of the post and that is the actions taken by FEMEN as this blog is about Ukraine – Not Russia. The FEMEN actions took place in Ukraine and they are a Ukrainian organsiation. To make it crystal clear to you, if FEMEN hadn’t done what they did in Ukraine, there would be no post whatsoever mentioning the Pussy Riot trial at all as this blog is ABOUT UKRAINE!

As for my bias for the regime, which regime is that? I spent some of the afternoon in an opposition party office in Odessa. I care not which party in is power, only that the policies they have will in some way will eventually benefit the people of Ukraine because all too often they don’t – regardless of which party is in power.

Knowing people in PoR, BYuT and Front for Change personally, I don’t have favourites although, as I have written here before historically, if I had a vote it would probably go to Yatseniuk. Then again if you paid attention to what is written instead of what you think is written, you would know that.

    • I appreciate the point I think you are trying to make. Namely he only served 4 months in prison and not his entire sentence, but as yet there is nothing definite that these women will serve 2 years either. In fact I expect them to serve 1 year at the most with effect from the date of sentencing yesterday.

The point I make is about disproportionate sentencing, and the fact relating to Gilmore is that he was sentenced to 18 months (whether he completed them all in prison or not), which many would deem a disproportionate sentencing from a UK court for his actions.
