It’s the thought that counts……or is it?

May 13, 2010

Well dear readers, I was brought up to believe it is the thought that counts…….but is it?

Interfax-Ukraine Ukraine’s lawmakers have amended the law on the status, guarantees to, and the social protection of veterans of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (the Second World War).

A total of 301 out of 379 MPs registered in the hall supported the law.

According to the amendments, disabled veterans who participated in the battles of the Great Patriotic War and the War against Japan will be provided with cars for free.

Now not wishing to be…….unkind.

What is the point of this?

To qualify for a free car you need to be……and let us be kind and say someone started fighting in the war at 16 years old and only took part in the last year, namely 1945…….81 years old today……and born 1929 or before!

Now I will not say that all 80+ year old drivers would be a hazard to other drivers……..but I would say that most urban 80+ year old war veterans would probably prefer the cash alternative to the car in a one off tax free payment.

Circumstances are different for everyone of course, but I really do not see that many 80 year old war vetrans wanting to drive in Ukraine at all.

Surley the cash payment would be far better……or a choice between cash or car……..as many pensioners could not even afford the insurance for the car here, let alone run it day to day.

Come on MPs, unless you are the owner of the car manufacturer and stand to make a few $ from State purchases of the cars, how about a bit of common sense and make an amendment to this for a car or cash equivilent for these people!

The world's oldest driver is 105-year old Shelia Thomson of Broughty Ferry, Scotland.
