6 Months of Voting Ahead in 2010…….Oh Deep Joy!

October 22, 2009

Well dear readers, it seems as though for the first 6 months of 2010 Ukrainians will be at the polling stations.

With the first round of the Presidential elections to be held on January 17th…….which I fully expect Viktor Yanukovych and Yulia Tymoshenko to get through………the second round of voting takes place in February……..when the new President will be voted in by the nation.

…….Errrm, no, I am not so sure who will win as it depends where the votes from those who did not make it to the second round go to…….I think it will be closer than anyone thinks…….at least today……..there is of course a lot of time between now and January for someone to drop a serious bollock!

Anyway, from mid February, no doubt there will be several weeks……..as is the Ukrainian way……….before a winner is declared.

So, as the election media war is already underway……..we can look forward to something like the end of March 2010 for this farce to be over……..unless Tymoshenko is declared the new President………when of course we then have a vacancy for the Prime Minister……..as she is currently Prime Minister.

Now that of course means more voting……..for the vacant position of Prime Minister………oh the joy of such a prospect.

If that was not enough…….guess what…….

Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission Andriy Mahera has said.

He said that according to the law, a regular local election campaign should last 60 days.

“So we can speak about the major stages of the local election process on May 30, starting from early April,” Mahera said.

He said that he had “no questions to ask” with respect to a parliament resolution scheduling the next local elections in Ukraine for May 30, 2010.

Mahera said that the resolution clearly foresees that the local elections would be held throughout Ukraine, apart from local councils and city mayors that were elected after 2006. – Interfax Ukraine

So, it maybe as follows:

First round of voting sees Tymoshenko and Yanukovych into the second round for the Presidency…….in effect leaving Ukraine without a President when the current President Yushenko get knocked out of the competition with effect from 17th January……..

Regardless of the eventual winner from Round 2, it will take weeks for an official declaration…….so possibly 2 or even 3 months without a President.

If it is Tymoshenko……..then as soon as she accepts Presidency…….there is no Prime Minister……..for months for the same reasons as the Presidency……

Whilst this lag of vacant Prime Minister and electing a new one is on going………a large proportion of Ukraine will return to the polls to change most of the local officials……with the usual scandals and fraud claims……

So, by August 2010……..if Ukraine is lucky……..there may eventually be a new governmental administrative chain all the way down to the person in the street (please note the lack of the word “effective”).

It is a bloody good thing that Ukraine is in such a position that it can continue in perfect harmony through any unknown future crisis’ during this time……..having so masterfully coped with the last one………..

What?…….It is still in the midst of the last one?……….

Better hold on tight then…….could be a bumpy ride ahead!!
