Those Little Things You Need To Bring With You!!!

April 20, 2009

Well, I seem to have something of a “readership”………Even if I don’t put up all your comments, it doesn’t mean I don’t read them.

All of you who are making suggestions……..I will get around to posting on them all, in and amongst the club, restaurant and hotel reviews et. al.

Now due to the “mixed” nature of my apparent “hardcore” readers, there is obviously a great deal of variation in what they want to read and where they are from.

Whilst on this subject, to the American lady who pointed out I make several spelling mistakes…….”Color” maybe correct in the USA……..but I am a Brit and “Colour” is the correct spelling in English………..a bit like you spell “neighbor” and we spell “neighbour”……..Ok?

I will grant you, I am not the best speller in the world……I was always much better with math…….but we Brits put the letter “U” into many words you don’t………..We also put the letter “S” where you will put the letter “Z”………

No that is not a f*cking Sebra…….it is a Zebra, just like in the US………I meant words like “organisation”……..smart-arse!!!!

Anyway, with this in mind……and responding to a dear reader, who asked what “essentials” they should bring to Ukraine, which cannot be found here……..These things should really be commented upon by nation………although there will be some will “overlap”………as others are “unique” to a nation’s culture.

Today, and with an extreme amount of favouritism…….(spelt correctly for a Brit…….before you go off on one again)……..I will start with the UK.  I will do a separate post for the “North Amercans” later.

Firstly, everything in Ukraine runs from a 2 pin plug……….therefore, as a Brit, you will need to bring adaptors from 3 pin to 2 pin for your travel iron, laptop etc etc.

Ukrainian electricity runs at 220V……..Therefore you do not need “circuit breakers” as it is the same as the UK…….you can just plug your laptop in without any difficulty or danger…….assuming you remembered a 2 pin adaptor, of course.

If your mobile is “roaming” and you need to contact the UK, the cost is about £1.50 per minute for a call and £0.40 for a text message……..but then, unless it is an emergency,……..at which point the cost is irrelevant……..why would you want to contact the UK?…………You came here to get away from the damned place after all!!

Medicines are easily obtainable here from the Apkita’s……….in fact, what you would require a Doctor’s prescription for in the UK, can easily be bought over the counter without one here…….for the most part.

The problem here is that many well known brands are either licenced and marketed under a different name…….or under the same name but packaged and named in the Cyrillic alphabet.  Therefore “Nurofen”, for example,  which is sold under the same name is actually “нурофен”………….Exactly…….better to bring them from home unless you can read Russian eh?

You will find that clothes can be either much more expensive……..if you actually want your Adidas to be Adidas……and not a snide or counterfeit copy………..however, in places like 7KM market, you can get a lot of cheap clothing……….as long as you don’t care that it is “knock off” or counterfeit.  I have posted on 7KM already………but you know that being an avid reader of my blog.

When it comes to food, if you are going to be here for any length of time, or are bringing a “gift” for a Brit you know here, then the following are “must bring with you’s”.

Marmite……….I know, I know, you either love it or you hate it.

Golden Syrup, Oxo, Bisto, Tetley Tea…………….although there is more different types of tea here than you will ever see in the UK, including Liptons and other well known brands………I just liked the Tetley Tea Folk.  Chinese ready made pour on sauces, curry cubes………in fact anything ready made Indian, Chinese or Mexican by way of sauces you should bring………unless your Russian is good enough to go to Privos market and converse with the “Stan’s” selling spices…………who will then mix you what you need.

z-3

Also, the Great British Banger is missing………..there are plenty of sausages here, but nothing tasting like your traditional British Banger.  You will not find Fish & Chips anywhere in Ukraine………..just forget it……….it’s a non-starter………and for me, a distant memory………sadly.

I could go on with the list of British “peculiarities” missing in Ukraine…….at least when it comes to food………as there seem to be a fair amount of “peculiar Brits” here……..although, thankfully, they are mostly to be found in Kyiv!!

Of course, unless you are coming here for longer than 2 weeks, this is of no importance…….as Odessa has so many good restaurants that you won’t miss any of the above……….and Slavic food is fantastic.

There really is no other issues by way of what to bring with you when you come………at least if you are coming for a short holiday………as Ukraine is situated on the continent of Europe after all……….and not the “back of beyond”!
