Energy privitisation continues in Ukraine

April 14, 2012

Whilst the government struggles to identify and package up parts of the infamous behemoth called Naftogaz for privatisation as recommended by the EBRD, it seems to be having little difficulty in deciding on other parts of the energy infrastructure to be privatised.

This week a law passed (with 243 votes in favour) to privatise the CHP plants around the country with a few exceptions.

It will be interesting to see how transparently these assets are sold.

  1. All of it would be the way to go, expect Ms Tymoshenko would renationalise the GTS the second she had the opportunity.

To her the GTS is a national strategic asset that must remain in government control.

Yatseniuk, despite making his first few millions acting as “agent” in pritivisation deals is against privitisation generally, so I suppose we should be grateful for small steps in the direction most external market players and FDI agencies have been pushing for.

  2. How about ALL of it? With government regulations on a ceiling on tax and charges?
