Way too busy today…..but something for you to ponder

September 8, 2010

Sorry dear readers, way to busy to post anything overly interesting today.

This may give you time to consider an exeptionally poor performance by the opposition party led by Yulia Tymoshenko yesterday.

After months of media promotion only 5000 people turned up to a protest over the 50% rise in gas prices.

The gas price for most people in Ukraine is paid under what is called a quadplata and relates to appartment block living without gas meters.

The old rate for gas for people such as this was 6 UAH ($0.80) per month no matter how much gas you used.  The new price is 9 UAH ($1.25) per month no matter how much gas you use.

To put this into perspective, the cheapest cup of coffee I have found in any cafe has been 15 UAH ($1.60 ish).

There fore even after the 50% increase in gas prices, the monthly gas bill for the majority of Ukrainians, regardless of gas usage, is still less than 1 cup of coffee in any cafe in the nation.

A battle chosen wisely?  One for you to ponder whilst I am busy doing other things.
