Well dear readers, the RADA has passed a law…….with 361 MP’s voting for it…..banning the checks by all oversight bodies on the media organisations within Ukraine leading up to the next Ukrainian Presidential election…….the date of which is yet ot be set but is likely to be January 2010.
This has been done to “remove legal, administrative, economic and organisational obstacles for covering the 2009 pre-election campaign.”
Basically, under the new law, no media outlet can be closed down other than by a decision of the owners or the courts.
So, with the Tax authorities, National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting and any other “interfering busy-body” with a reason to meddle now banned from intervening…….anything goes!!!
Now, having read my posts from the beginning…….being the avid reader of my drivel that you are…….you are more than aware that every oligarch in Ukraine owns a handful of politicians and at least one national TV station.
It therefore follows that fairly soon……..depending on which politician is on which station…….we will soon see which politicians are owned by which oligarch……and possibly the political leanings of the oligarch…….although the latter is not necessarily true, as to back the horse most likely to win gives you a far better return on your investment than to back the horse you actually like the most.
It will also lead to an even more public back stabbing and blame culture campaign than the usual RADA daily verbal political assassinations……and occasional actual assassinations……associated with the mess which is the Ukrainian politics.
So, no media outlet can be shut down, no matter what political statements and agenda is aired on it……featuring politicians which are granted immunity from prosecution under the Constitution of Ukraine because of their office……providing the backdrop for a particularly vicious, nasty and toxic campaign ahead.
This, whilst still trying to get political unity amongst the main parties……who’s leaders will be openly slandering each other to the world……to fight the economic difficulties of Ukraine.
There will of course be very little said with regards to policies……and just like American politics, no statements of how money will be raised for any policies which are mentioned……unlike UK policies where the policies are spoken about in terms only of how they will be financed rather than the actual policy…….and the whole election campaign will turn into a massive “pissing contest” just as previous ones have been.
There are only 2 certain losers in this campaign……the current President, who has failed to deliver on almost every single election promise made 5 years ago……and the people of Ukraine.
The result is predictable……so much verbal assassination of each leader by the other that no trust will be forthcoming between them because of what has been said publically about them by others…..leading to the continued check-mate which currently exists in Ukrainian politics…..and the east and south verses north and west Ukraine political divide becoming more separated rather than united.
This is, however, still a wonderful country to live in!!!
